Niko Hems: The biggest myth is that we are close to “solving aging.” We are not. Human lifespan studies are extremely hard to do because we live so long. Most claims are based on rodent data, which doesn’t directly translate to humans. What we really need are robust surrogate markers for aging. But we’re not there yet. That gap leaves space for a lot of nonsense.

Take epigenetic clocks. They are often marketed as if they can tell you your “real age” or predict how long you’ll live. In reality, these clocks vary significantly depending on the algorithm and tissue sample. They can provide research insights, but they have no clear medical endpoint and should never be used for clinical decision-making. Still, they are pushed aggressively because they look flashy and sell tests.

Yes, we can already target parts of the 12 hallmarks of aging, and that’s exciting. But we don’t know the overall impact on lifespan yet. What we do know is how to optimize healthspan—and the most effective strategies are boring basics: structured training, good nutrition, quality sleep, and early risk detection. Not miracle supplements or influencer-driven products.

Niko Hems: If I had to emphasize one science-backed recommendation, it would be prioritizing sleep. Leaders often compromise here, thinking they can “push through” with less rest. But sleep is the foundation of recovery: it impacts cardiovascular health, immune resilience, memory consolidation, and decision-making quality. No supplement or intervention can compensate for chronic sleep deprivation.

Executives who structure their schedules to protect 7–8 hours of quality sleep will notice immediate benefits in energy, focus, and resilience. Long term, it is one of the most powerful and underestimated longevity strategies available.
